When Might Your Battery Need Replacing

There are a number of signs that you should look for that may indicate that your battery needs servicing or replacement.

WARNING SIGNS

Slow Engine Crank – Cranking refers to the rotation of the crankshaft that is necessary to start a car. If your car takes abnormally long to start and/or sounds like it is struggling when starting, then there may be an issue with the battery.

Check Engine Light – If the check engine light is present on your dashboard, then this may indicate weak battery power or another battery related issue.

Low Battery Fluid – Battery fluid is essential for a properly functioning battery. You can typically check your battery fluid levels yourself and if they appear to be low then it may need to be topped up. Low battery fluid levels can be caused by overheating which may indicate an issue with the charging system.

Swollen Battery Case – Excessive heat can often cause your battery casing to swell, decreasing both your battery’s lifespan and performance.

Bad Odour – If you notice a strong, sulfuric odour around your battery, then there may be a leak and/or corrosion.

Old Battery Age (3+ Years) – Batteries that have been in use for 3+ years are typically considered old. Vehicle batteries can last beyond 3 years however, it is important to get your battery inspected at least yearly after the 3-year mark. Batteries can also have a shorter lifespan depending on your driving habits so don’t wait 3 years for a check-up.

Extending Your Battery Life

Follow our tips below to prolong the life of your battery and ensure maximum braking performance.

Jeep Batteries

Clean your Battery – Dirty battery casing can cause short circuits and build-up on battery terminals can cause corrosion. Regularly wiping down your battery can help to keep it clean.

Avoid Short Trips – As you drive, your battery recharges. Taking frequent trips that are too short for your battery to fully recharge will cause the voltage to drop until eventually it cannot start the vehicle.

Turn off Extra Features – Before starting your vehicle, ensure that any features that require power during start-up are turned off. This includes seat heaters, music system, lights etc.

Limit Heat Exposure – Heat is not good for your battery as it accelerates the rate of water evaporation from your battery’s cells. Try to park your vehicle out of the sun and consider insulating your battery from heat.

Clamp your Batteries – When your battery vibrate too rapidly, internal parts can get damaged which can lead to short circuits and a reduced battery lifespan. Using an approved clamp can help to hold your batter in place and reduce vibrations.

Test your Battery – Check your battery frequently by connecting it to a voltmeter. If your battery has less than 12.5 volts, it should be recharged. If it doesn’t hold a charge, it will need to be replaced.
